Visit Wellington

The coolest little capital in the world (as deemed by Lonely Planet in 2011) merges small village charm with big city style. World class cocktail bars, designer and vintage shopping, award-winning restaurants, contemporary art galleries and innovative museums are all tucked into a compact waterfront city filled with passionate locals, stunning views and fantastic attractions.

Nestled between Marlborough and Martinborough two of New Zealand’s major wine regions, and in the heart of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail, Wellington will not disappoint when it comes to choices for food and wine. In fact the city is home to over 400 cafes and restaurants, that’s enough per person to rival New York.

New Zealand’s capital is a place where you can learn the stories of the youngest country on earth’s history, people, landscape and skies. Visitors can take free tours through Parliament and the distinctive Beehive building to see where New Zealand’s key decisions are made, then get an insight into our past and present at the world-leading Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Just a short walk away from the national museum, the Museum of Wellington City and Sea gives local history a dedicated space.

Nationally recognised as the arts and culture capital, Wellington is bustling and vibrant, yet nature experiences are only moments from the central city. One minute visitors can be sipping a coffee on Cuba Street and the next they can be strolling through lush bush listening to the birdsong of New Zealand’s native residents at ZEALANDIA, taking in the panoramic views from the summit of Mount Victoria, or spotting fur seals on the South Coast.

Wellington hums with creative energy and talent – particular in the bar and theatre districts. The city’s major events calendar includes the Brancott Estate World of WearableArt Awards Show, Visa Wellington On a Plate (NZ’s largest culinary festival), the New Zealand International Arts Festival and the world renowned NZI Sevens rugby tournament – New Zealand’s biggest fancy dress party!

As home to Sir Peter Jackson and Oscar-winning Weta Workshop, Wellington is New Zealand’s production capital having produced The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and many other blockbusters.

Top 5 must dos
1. Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
2. Zealandia: The Karori Sanctuary Experience
3. Half or full day tour with a passionate Wellington guide
4. Wellington Cable Car & Cable Car Museum
5. Experiencing the café culture & award-winning restaurants

With so much to see and do, it could be hard to know where to start! We’ve put together some options, to make sure you get the most out of your visit to Wellington.

  • You can’t say you’ve been to Wellington unless you’ve visited Te Papa, the National Museum of New Zealand, and Australasia’s most frequented Museum.
  • Wellingtonians love their coffee and have a vibrant café culture. Partake in Wellington’s café culture from morning to night. Cafes are abundant throughout the city, but the Cuba Street district is the cities café hub.
  • Take a short drive or an adventurous walk to the top of Mount Victoria for a panoramic view of Wellington.
  • Discover New Zealand's stories of the stars at Carter Observatory located right at the top of the Wellington Cable Car.
  • Wellington also offers great shopping, from famous New Zealand designers like Karen Walker and Zambesi, to successful local designers like Mandatory, Starfish, Andrea Moore and Voon.
  • Whilst shopping in the Lambton quarter, be sure to ride the Wellington Cable Car. Take the cable car to the very end and you will be rewarded with a stunning view of Wellington city.
  • For dinner, choose from the many quality restaurants in the Courtenay and Cuba quarters such as Logan Brown, Matterhorn, Floriditas and Olive Cafe. After dinner, check out Wellington’s vibrant nightlife in the surrounding bars and clubs.
  • Wellington also boasts a full calendar of events – be sure to catch check what’s on when you’re in town.
